Grades 1-5

Come to Mass every Sunday as a family.

After-school classes for grades 1-5 take place on site at the parish on Wednesdays, from 3:45-5:00PM. New families to town are always welcome to register any time during the year. Our calendar follows as closely as possible the school year calendars of the local school districts.

Faith Formation Grades 1-5    2018-2019 School Year

Parent Information & Responsibilities
We look forward to working with you in the faith development of your child. Understanding that the Faith Formation of your child is not the sole responsibility of the Church, the following are the responsibilities of each family. We are here to supplement what is taught at home.

Curriculum: Call to Faith, OSV Curriculum Division, Harcourt Press.
At the end of each chapter in the book is a page on ‘Living our Faith with a Parent.’ Catechists will be sending this page home on a weekly basis. Please read these pages and enjoy the activities as a family. Reinforce the lesson that was taught that week.

Archdiocesan Curriculum guidelines for each grade level are available.

Each week the session will begin Wednesday in the Church at 3:45pm with a short prayer service.
Across the front of the stage there will be a sign with each Catechist's name and grade level. Children should sit in a single row in front of the sign. Catechists will be standing by their sign. Parents are invited to bring their children into the auditorium and stay for the prayer service. After the prayer service the children will proceed with their Catechist to their classroom. While the children are in class, parents are welcome to stay in the auditorium.

Children will meet in the Curch at 4:50pm for closing prayer and dismissal at 5:00pm. All parents must come into the Church to pick up their children at dismissal.  If your child will be picked up by someone else we must have your authorization form on file. Please do not have anyone else pick up your child if we have not been notified in writing. In case of emergency, please call our office.

Being a Model of Faith to the Children:
It is important that we live the faith we are teaching our children. We show our children the importance of our faith by attending Mass on Sundays and Holy Days, attending reconciliation services and helping with service projects.

Come to Mass every Sunday as a family. Make this a priority, before sports, rehearsals, track meets, cook outs, parties, etc. At OLMC our Mass schedule is: Saturday at 5:30pm, Sunday at 8:30am and 10:30am.

Pray at home as a family: before and after meals, before going to bed. Teach your child the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be.

Volunteers for each session:
Your participation is essential, we are in this together. If you did not return your volunteer sheet, we will assign you as needed!

Attendance Policy:
A child is expected to attend each class session. Should your child miss class for any reason, they must complete the missed chapter at home. Please ask the Catechist for your child's book the next time you pick him/her up from class and complete the missed lesson. Please drop off the completed work at the Faith Formation office. After a third absence you and your child must meet with Father Sean. When your child will be absent, call the Faith Formation office at 201-391-7400 prior to class time. Please leave a message if we are unable to answer the phone. We will be calling each child who is absent if we have not received a phone call from you.

Discipline Policy:
All children are to display appropriate behavior in the classroom. If a child is being disrespectful, uncooperative, or disruptive in the class, your child will be sent to the office. Should this behavior continue we will make a phone call to the parent. You will be asked to stay in the classroom with your child or consider home study.

Cell phones must be turned off during class time. If your child uses his/her phone, it will be taken away and given back at the end of class. Please do not allow your child to bring any other electronic devices to class. Parents should keep an open line of communication with their child's Catechist.  Again, it is vital that we live our faith in the home. Please reinforce the lesson during the week.

Allergies and Special Medical or Educational Needs:
If your child has any special needs that you did not already list on the registration form, please put them in writing and drop off to the Faith Formation office. Everything is kept confidential.

Grade 5 students:
All Grade 5 students are mandated by the Diocese to take the ACRE assessment. It will be given during your child's regularly scheduled class session. This is not an assessment of your individual child rather it assesses our Faith Formation program as a whole. Should you want any further information about the assessment, please call our office.

If Class is cancelled due to Weather:
If Public Schools in Woodcliff Lake are closed due to weather or have an early dismissal, then we will not have classes either. We will send an email to all families if we are not having class that day.

An updated message will also be posted on the homepage of the parish website: Please keep in mind that if we lose power or if our parking lot presents a hazard, class will be cancelled.
